Recap: Hammond tennis
The Hammond boys tennis team enjoyed an outstanding season under first-year coach Bernie McGuire, and is looking forward to even better things in 2010.
The Skyhawks finished 14-1 overall, going 13-0 during the regular season to win the SCISA Region 2-3A championship. Hammond was eliminated in the state semifinals .
“The chemistry of this team was a coach”s dream, said McGuire. “Every one of the 13 players on varsity thought team first and worked very hard on all aspects of their games from January through the playoffs. The team has asked to work during the summer on their games. If this is an indication of what is to come, watch out for Hammond to again be a force in the region and state.”
Hammond’s top six players all finished with impressive individual records. Freshman Ben Horst was 14-0, followed by sophomore Ira Usry (8-5), seventh-grader Bill Horst (13-1), sophomore Ted Lydon (12-3), sophomore Will Besley (13-2) and sophomore William Greenberg (12-3).
Ben and Bill Horst and Usry were named all-region players. Ben Horst was the team’s all-state pick and named the SCISA player of the year.
The lone departing senior is Stephen Chen. The team awards went to Miles Reese (most improved), Kyle Ladrech (Kettle Award), Ben Horst (leadership) and Greenberg (Coach’s Award).
